Creating Calm in the Chaos of Early Motherhood

A 90-minute mindfulness and meditation workshop for a reality you might recognise: tired, overstimulated, pulled in ten directions, almost never alone and short on time.

In-person on the Central Coast, NSW, and online · 90 minutes · Live workshop

About

This isn't a standard meditation class. We start by looking at why calm can feel so hard at this stage of life (spoiler: it's your brain and the expectations around you, not a personal failing). Then we try practical ways of working with it that don't need a silent room, 30 spare minutes or a perfectly focused mind. We finish with a longer guided practice together.

What you'll leave with

A kinder, more realistic sense of what calm can look like in early motherhood, and practical ways to keep practising in everyday life.

What we'll explore

Through discussion and short guided experiments:

  • micro-rest: finding small moments of recovery
  • self-compassion when things aren't going the way you'd like
  • reframing unhelpful thoughts and expectations
  • working with overstimulation and moments when emotions spike
  • meditation that can happen in the middle of actual life

No meditation experience needed. This workshop isn't a substitute for mental health support.

My approach

Together with you

I share my own practice and what has helped me along the way. Every moment is a fresh start. I don't have it all figured out, so I am there learning with you.

Zen at the roots, inspired by a lot

Zen is my home and my daily practice. It has my heart, but I also believe many practices are different shapes of the same thing: how to be a more present, kinder human being in this interconnected, limited opportunity called a lifetime. So I draw on loving-kindness, breathwork, somatic practices and tools from psychology such as self-compassion and cognitive defusion.

Curious about evidence

I was a researcher before I was a meditator, and I still check the evidence. I don't expect miracles, and I won't promise them.

With real life in mind

We're often sold a “kumbaya” version of meditation: beautiful spaces, multi-sensory experiences, instant relief and transformation. There's nothing wrong with that, but it isn't accessible to everyone, and it isn't the only way to practise. My approach is more down to earth, sometimes sceptical — we start exactly where we are and we own it. But I try to bring humour and some light to the heavy parts.
